Poinsettia Bowl Pick

December 23, 2010

SD Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl: San Diego State (8-4) vs. Navy (9-3), 8:00pm on ESPN
Navy is 1-1 in bowl games under Ken Niumatalolo and San Diego State is making its first bowl appearance since 1998.
San Diego State has a clear home-field advantage, but Navy has fans all around the country and a huge naval base in San Diego. It’ll be interesting to see what the field conditions are like after Qualcomm Stadium was flooded this week.
A lot of people have overlooked San Diego State and what Brady Hoke has done there until the Aztecs almost upset TCU. That opened a lot of eyes around the country, but no one mentioned how good San Diego State was and simply wondered if TCU wasn’t as good as they all thought. The Aztecs still didn’t gain any respect. Now they’re on national television for the first time this year.
San Diego State has to be considered the favorite in this game with its dynamic offense and they already beat a triple-option team, Air Force, earlier this year. This team also almost knocked off Missouri . SD State quarterback Ryan Lindley finishes his career tonight and he’s got the size to play at the next level but has interception problems. I watched San Diego State twice this year against TCU and against Utah. In the Utah game, Lindley threw for over 500 yards but three costly interceptions hurt them in the 38-34 loss. There’s no doubt in my mind though that San Diego State is the second best team in the Mountain West ahead of Utah.
They love vertical passing. Both DeMarco Sampson and Vincent Brown have over 1,000 receiving yards and 18 yards per catch. Freshman tail back Ronnie Hillman has had an outstanding season. I think on paper everything goes against Navy.
This will also be Navy senior QB and Lowe’s Senior Class Award winner Ricky Dobbs’ last game. In the final game against Army, Navy opened up the passing game. They’ll have to overt to the passing game in some situations tonight to beat San Diego State, and Navy is the best triple-option offense.
Every time I pick against Navy, they seem to win. I don’t know if Navy can stop San Diego State’s offense, but I’m willing to go out on a limb anyway. Since I’m picking Navy to win this one, expect them to lose.
Prediction: Navy 28, San Diego State 27

Maaco Bowl Las Vegas Recap:
Prediction: Boise State 41, Utah 10
This was such a sloppy game but again fun to watch whether it was a blowout or not. Boise State's defense plays with an energy like none other and that offense is like clockwork. Boise did mix in three of their signature trick plays but all three failed, but were exciting anyway. Such an innovative offense. But the game was too sloppy, seven fumbles, six of them were lost. Boise State should have had a good 40 points on the board. Utah was without starting QB Jordan Wynn and Terrance Cain was ineffective but didn't get help from his offensive line or receivers. Too many crucial holding calls against Utah and too many dropped passes by Utah receivers. Three could have resulted in possible touchdowns and it could have been a completely different game. But as ESPN's Trevor Matich said, the only way to beat Boise State is to "cheat." Utah tried with all those holding penalties but couldn't get away with it.
Result: Boise State 26, Utah 3
